Greensols Australia - Products & Services - Magnesium Carbonate

Magnesium Carbonate (Magnesite - MgCO3) is marketed in 4 main forms:

  1. Crude magnesite (Figure 1) - primarily for use in chemicals and agriculture;
  2. Dead-burned magnesia (DBM) (Figure 2) - used almost exclusively for refractory applications; it has the highest melting point of all common refractory oxides; is used for high temperature containment processes in the cement, glass, steel, and metallurgical industries; used in furnaces, ladles and kilns;
  3. Caustic calcined magnesia (CCM) – for use in making oxychloride and oxysulphate cements for flooring and wallboards, mouldings and acoustic tiles, and various environmental and chemical applications; and
  4. Electro-fused Magnesia (EFM) (Figure 3) - superior to DBM in strength, abrasion resistance and chemical stability. EFM used in high wear areas in steel making, optical equipment, nuclear reactors, and rocket nozzles.

Currently, no raw magnesite above 95% purity can be produced traditionally; which means that significant refining costs are unavoidable. Due to GSA produced Magnesite being of such a high purity (99% and less than ten microns in size), refining costs are significantly reduced.

Magnesite & CCM also used in the manufacture of: Paints; paper; plastics; rubber; oil; pharmaceuticals; fertiliser; animal feed; building materials; electrical insulations; industrial fillers; flue gas desulphurisation; and as fire retardant.

Vast potential also exists for the new generation cements (known as "environmentally friendly" cements) that use magnesium carbonate rather than calcium carbonate in the production process. These cements have three main advantages:

  1. They have a higher resistance to heat;
  2. They 'breathe' in atmospheric CO2 for a considerable period after production; and
  3. They are porous, a distinct advantage in areas where groundwater recharge issues are of concern.

This is due to three crucial elements:

  1. No heat is used during the production process;
  2. Crushing of the minerals is not required;
  3. and Extremely low operating costs

Greensols are in close collaboration with TECECO, the owners of Eco-Kiln magnesium cement technology and the leading researchers in this field.
